In the Education Act 1989 the following is stated:

75. Boards to control the management of schools -

Except to the extent that any enactment or the general law of New Zealand provides otherwise, a school's Board has complete discretion to control the management of the school as it thinks is fit

76. Principals -

  1. A school's principal is the Board's chief executive in relation to the school's control and management
  2. Except to the extent that any enactment, or the general law of New Zealand provides otherwise, the principal -
    (a) Shall comply with the Board's general policy Directions; and...

Therefore the Board has the Governance role and the day to day management responsibility is that of the Principal.

Aparima Board of Trustees contains 5 elected parent representatives, 1 elected staff representative, 1 elected student representative and the Principal. The Board has the power to co opt should they require a member for a particular task and period.

The term for the parental/staff representative is 3 years and the next election will be 2007.

The student representative is for a 1 year period.

There is training and support offered to Board members so that what may appear as a daunting task is not.

The Board meets once a month and these dates can be found on the calendar ( which can be found here...)
