Junior English
English is offered from Year 7 onwards at Aparima College.
English - NCEA Level 1
English at Level 1 is compulsory. Students undertaking English at Year 11 will study towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievement Level 1.
The NCEA Level 1 English course is made up of Achievement Standards. Equivalent unit standards will be substituted where needed. A course consisting of achievement standards, unit standards, or both, is available at this level.
Achievement standards are assessed both internally and externally. External assessments will take the form of a written examination. Examinations will be held at the end of the year. Students will enter for separate achievement standards. There are nine achievement standards with a total of 24 credits available in English at Level 1.
English - NCEA Level 2
A course of English at Year 12 is compulsory. Students will undertake NCEA Level 2 at Year 12.
The NCEA Level 2 English course is made up of Achievement Standards. Equivalent unit standards will be substituted where needed. A course consisting of achievement standards, unit standards, or both, is available at this level. There are eight achievement standards with a total of 24 credits available in English at Level 2.
This course includes:
- Works of literature from several genre, including the novel, short story and poetry.
- A language research project.
- A film study (studying one or more feature films).
- Media skills.
- Writing in appropriate registers (transactional, poetic and expressive).
- Maintaining personal response and course journals.
English - NCEA Level 3
A course of English at Year 13 is not compulsory, but is advisable. Students will undertake NCEA Level 3 at Year 13.
The NCEA Level 3 English course is made up of Achievement Standards. Equivalent unit standards will be substituted where needed. A course consisting of achievement standards, unit standards, or both, is available at this level. There are seven achievement standards with a total of 24 credits available in English at Level 3.
This course includes:
- Works of literature from several genre, which may include the novel, short story and poetry.
- A language or literature research project.
- A film study (studying one or more feature films).
- A study of a Shakespearean play.
- Writing in appropriate registers (transactional, poetic and expressive).
- Maintaining personal response and course journals.

Junior
Maori is offered from Year 7 to Year 10 at Aparima College.
