The Science Department

Science

Junior Science

Science is covered from Year 7 to Year 11 at Aparima College.

Science - NCEA Level 1

This subject covers a maximum of 24 credits toward the National Certificate of Educational Achievement.

Subjects studied at this level include genetics, microbiology, energy, forces, electricity, acid reactions, astronomy and geology.

Biology

Biology - NCEA Level 2

Level 2 Biology is a fantastic course which offers students a look into the main areas of biology. They will investigate how individual cells work, the influence of genetics, all the way up to how different animals function. They will research ecology and the threats to our native wildlife with field research to be carried out on the edge of the Fiordland National Park where students can hone their research skills.

Biology - NCEA Level 3

Level 3 is a brilliant, exciting course which investigates the behaviour and ecological niches of plants and animals. We critically analyse contemporary genetic modification techniques and forensic science techniques that are being used in this point in time.

The course gets down to the nitty gritty of genetics and we find out why individuals look the way they do.

An awesome field trip to the edge of Fiordland National Park also increases field research skills.

Chemistry

Senior Chemistry - NCEA Level 2 and 3

Senior Chemistry is a two year Science course that investigates the world of chemicals and how they impact our life. The topics covered build upon the student's knowledge of metals, non-metals, organic chemistry and acid/base reactions from previous years Science and Chemistry experience.

Physics

Senior Physics - NCEA Level 2 and 3

Senior Physics is a two year Science course that investigates the forces and energies of the world around us. The course focuses on the contexts of Waves, Mechanics, Electricity, Electromagnetism, Atoms and Radioactivity.
