Geography

Geography - NCEA Level 3

This course is designed to allow the student to gain the maximum benefits towards University Entrance or to be an interesting course for those wishing to learn more about this subject. It would be of great benefit to anyone considering tourism as a career.

History

History - NCEA Level 3

Will be considered if sufficient interest is shown.

Humanities

Humanities - NCEA Level 1

It is designed to cater for those who want to know more about the world they live in through a study of past events which have shaped New Zealand , combined with a knowledge of how the physical and cultural settings work.

This course offers a chance to do some research into Twentieth Century History, and to gain an insight into the reasons for things like earthquakes and floods and how they affect the world we live in. In the New Zealand history section we deal with the issues which New Zealand faced prior to World War II and what happened afterwards. The geography section complements this by looking at the way in which our country was formed and the dynamics which govern our way of life in this country.

This course offers a wide variety of study techniques which include a film study, computer-based activities, learning how to research and guest speakers.

Humanities - NCEA Level 2

Over the past years we have had numerous students who have requested History or Geography and have not been able to do the subject of their choice. As these two subjects go hand in hand this course has been designed to cater for both.

The course begins with a History component which looks at the New Zealand Identity. Who are we? When did we become a nation? What makes us different from other countries in our outlook and traditions? We then follow the Geography course on from Year 11 with a close look at glaciation in New Zealand and the make-up of the South Island 's physical geography. After this it is on to some social geography with a close up look at urban development and how it has developed in New Zealand and overseas. We wind up the year with a look at how World War One started. As New Zealand was a member of the British Empire and closely identified with Britain this ties in with the way the Year started.

This course offers the student a series of different activities and assessments which include field work - Borland Lodge, visiting the museum in town, guest speakers, film and poster studies as well as identifying with figures from the past.

NCEA external Achievement Standards are also offered at the end of the year for all papers.
