The Technology Department

Boat Building

National Certificate in Boat Building - Level 2 and 3

This course will equip the students with skills that will enable them to seek employment in the boat building industry, however, the skills learnt will be applicable to any of the trades ie carpentry, joinery, welding and sheet metal work.

Students would be advised to consider the boat handling courses being offered to complement the boat building course.

Electronics

Electronics - NCEA Level 2

A unit standard based Electronics course is proposed for 2006. If you are interested in this course please see Mr Robinson.

Graphics

Junior

Graphics is offered in Year 9 and 10 as an option.

Graphics - NCEA Level 1

The students work will be assessed against the 4 external and 4 internally assessed achievement standards.

Graphics - NCEA Level 2

Year 12 Graphics is an extension of what has been studied at Year 9, 10 and 11. The course is structured around four sections.

  • Graphic Communication and Design
  • Environmental Design
  • Technological Design
  • Media Design

The skills learnt in Technical Drawing are still taught and these are complimented by design problems that the students are able to solve.

Engineering Unit Standards are available for those interested in this field.

Graphics - NCEA Level 3

Students are offered the opportunity to gain 20 Level 3 credits.

This course is design based, the purpose being for students to develop and apply their graphic skills to solving problems.

One of the projects will be based on a negotiated brief based on the needs of a client, identified by the student.

Home Economics

Junior

Home economics is offered in Year 9 and 10 as an option.

Home Economics - Year 10 - NCEA Level 1

Students will study Unit Standards in Year 10 Home Economics. The units will be credited to the students in the following year.

Home Economics and Food Nutrition - NCEA Level 1

Students will study the following topics:

  • Food Safety and Hygiene
  • Convenience Foods
  • Preserving Methods for Food
  • Basic Food Preparation Skills
  • Meal Planning
  • Nutritional Requirement for Particular Groups of People, particularly teenagers and children.

Assessment will be though a mixture of National Certificate of Educational Achievement standards (two internal and one external) and some Home Economic unit standards.

Hospitality

National Certificate in Hospitality - Level 1 and 2

Hospitality Institute Unit Standards are offered over two years towards a Level 1 National Certificate in Hospitality.

Technology

Technology - NCEA Level 1

This programme is based around quality practical projects. At least two projects will be completed over the year.

This course will lead onto the Boat Building course.
